Linwei Wang Named New Director of RIT’s Personalized Healthcare Technology Initiative
Linwei Wang has been named the new director of the Personalized Health Technology Research Initiative at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Adam Smith has been named creative director, a new position within the group. It is one of RIT’s strategic research areas and has been instrumental in developing new healthcare solutions in areas such as non-invasive technologies, technology-enabled behavioral health and new cardiac care capabilities.
Wang will take on the role held by David Borkholder, who is taking a leave of absence from university to serve as director of research and development for the start-up, Heart Health Intelligence (HHI).
“Since the initiative began in 2016, we have seen exciting growth in healthcare research at RIT,” said Borkholder, Bausch and Lomb Professor at RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. “Key to this success has been a deliberate emphasis on building networks of teachers in science, technology and the arts. The creation of the new position of Creative Director recognizes the importance of this element in research at RIT, and I am pleased that Adam Smith has agreed to take on this role. Wang is a professor of computer science at RIT’s Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences and directs the Computational Biomedicine Lab. She has extensive experience in the development of algorithms for biomedicine. Smith, associate professor and director of the BFA in New Media Design and MFA in Visual Communication Design programs at the School of Design, part of RIT’s College of Art and Design, has experience in academia and the corporate work in the field of multimedia and the interactive Web. pattern. The two professor-researchers have been part of the personalized health care technologies initiative since its inception and have contributed to its interdisciplinary work integrating design and biomedical technologies.
Borkholder has also been with the initiative since its inception. He is one of RIT’s most distinguished professor-researchers and has developed numerous healthcare devices, most recently the FIT Seat System, a toilet seat with high-tech sensors embedded on its surfaces to detect a wide range of cardiovascular measurements, with the potential to provide physicians with near real-time information on patient status.
The chair is currently being developed by Heart Health Intelligence (HHI). In 2014, Borkholder and Nicholas Conn, a postdoctoral fellow at RIT, developed the original FIT Seat technology, together with University of Rochester Medical Center cardiologist Karl Schwarz, MD HHI started as a start-up with RIT Venture Creations and has since launched the company with Austin McChord as Managing Director. Conn, who worked with Borkholder on the design of the FIT seat, is the company’s scientific director.
